Divinity Games
Catholic Challenge Bible Game (computer game)
More than 2,000 questions challenge players (about age 8 and up) at different levels of Bible knowledge. The CD will run on either Windows or Mac, and it requires no installation. You will want to have sound capability to hear background liturgical music and computer responses to correct answers. The game can be set up for players of different skill levels within the same game. It allows players to choose from icons with up to four players per game. You can set up other players, simply checking boxes next to those playing when you begin a game. The program can even show accumulated scores of players and print out certificates showing student performance levels for a game. You can choose from a variety of time limits or no time limit for questions, and you can set it so players lose points for incorrect answers to make it more challenging. The spin of the spinner, correctly answered questions, and success with bonus "wisdom" questions determine who gets around the "board" most quickly with the most points. "Game" elements work fairly well to keep it interesting, and the graphics are nicely done. However, this is not designed to compete with glitzy, animated computer games; it really is a learning/review tool.
You can figure out how to set up each game fairly easily without instructions, but if you go to the pull-down "help" menu, there are complete explanations of numerous options. When you're introducing the game, I recommend letting players use a Bible to look things up if they can do it within a certain time limit. This way they'll become more familiar with the Bible and will also be able to answer more questions correctly. This and the Catechism Game both have received the nihil obstat and imprimatur.
Catholic Challenge Catechism Game (computer game)
This CD works the same as the Bible Game, but questions are drawn largely from the Catechism. Questions also address players' knowledge of the liturgy of the Mass, the Sacraments, the Bible, prayers, Church structure, and moral applications of Christian principles. There are over 2,200 questions in the game, and answers are cross-referenced to the Catechism when they are confirmed or corrected. Bonus questions include multiple choice identification of music from hymns. Questions are worthwhile, not just trivial pursuit. This game will definitely expand and enhance players' familiarity with the Catechism, and it should be fun for the family to play together.
Divinity - The Catholic Catechism Learning System and Catholic Quiz Flip Books
The Divinity board game and flip books have objectives similar to the computer games: to help Catholic families master Bible and Catechism knowledge.
The Divinity - The Catholic Catechism Learning System features a full-color game board with questions at three levels of difficulty. It has more than 650 questions and is quite challenging, suggested for ages 11 and up. Teens and adults are likely to have the most fun with this Trivial Pursuit type game. Catechism questions are similar to those in the CD game. There are different levels of difficulty for the questions so players of differing abilities can play together. You might have to adapt the rules a bit to fit your situation.
Flip books focus on either catechism (titled New Catholic Quiz) or Bible knowledge (titled Catholic Bible Quiz), with catechism quiz flip books available for each of grades 1-8 and for Confirmation, and Bible Quiz flip books for levels 1-9 (divided into three books for each of three levels--elementary, intermediate, and advanced).
Each flip book features 200 questions and answers arranged by categories with four to five questions to a page, with answers on the reverse. Answers include catechism and Bible references. Questions are assigned values of from 1 to 3 points, and the suggested goal is to accumulate 10 points in each of the four categories of questions. However, you might also want to use the questions along with a Trivial Pursuit type game board you already own or make up other "game rules."
Flip books are sold through the publisher in sets of 3 although you might find them available individually from distributors.
