Bible Memory by Memlok

Memlok

Memlok was originally published in a binder, but it is now available only as a computer program that runs on PCs or with Virtual PC software on a Mac. The entire family can easily share the Memlok program, each member printing out memory cards they wish to learn. You might want to have extra sets of plastic card holders for each family member.

You will need to select a Bible version when you order your Memlok program. You can choose NIV, KJV, NKJ, and NASB versions, but you can order an additional version--you are actually purchasing a “key” to unlock the second translation on your original CD—for $7.95.

Memlok was one of the first Bible memory programs to use rebus-type visual cues as an aid to Scripture memorization. Visual clues on memory verse cards illustrate beginning or key words of verses to act as memory cues. Some of the clues are silly, some stretch for the connection, some are great; but the overall idea is that by establishing a visual connection for each verse, the verses (with references) are recalled much more easily. Verses are arranged under 48 topics, with over 700 verses on 550 cards (the size of a business card) included. We learn the verses under whichever topic we choose. The verses should be stored in the clear, plastic cardholder sheets for review. (Buy them as a set of 5 sheets.) The visual clues are all incorporated onto one summary card, providing another memory device to recall related verses.

The program should take only five to ten minutes a day, and long term retention of verses should be greater than with other programs because of the review system. Accountability is stressed. There is a Completion Record sheet to be initialed by whoever hears us recite the verses, but we must make our own arrangements for that person to check on our progress.

Another program feature allows us to attach personal notes; another provides a practice pad for self-testing; and yet another lets the user erase portions of verses to learn a phrase at a time

Memlok should work for all ages, although older family members will have to help non-readers with beginning memorization until the clues are easily recalled. There’s enough memory work here to last a family for ten years!
