HOMESCHOOL REVIEWS |
Welcome to the Catholic Church (CD-ROM) version 3.0Harmony Media, Inc.Catholic homeschoolers will find this CD-ROM a valuable resource for Church history, doctrine and theology, Church documents, and lives of the saints. This is a smoothly functioning, beautifully designed program with 120,000 links between topics, a huge index, and excellent search capability so that we can pick a topic and quickly view different sources that address that topic. It includes over 1500 illustrations, and Gregorian chant plays in the background through many sections of the program. All texts carry the Imprimatur, making this a dependable source for information. Extensive footnoting and hypertexts to sources or references make it easy to research and identify the origin of information. The home page features six main sections: Divine Revelation, Church Teaching, Mass and Sacraments, Prayer and Spirituality, Saints and History, and Church Organization. A number of books, including multi-volume series, plus major documents are included as sources. They are the Revised Standard and New American versions of the Bible, Catholic Edition; documents of Vatican II; The Sources of Catholic Dogma by Henry Denziger; The Catholic Catechism by Fr. John Hardon, S.J. (copyright 1975); The Way of the Lord Jesus by Dr. Germain Grisez (3-volume work on the Church’s moral teaching); My Daily Bread by Fr. Anthony Paone, S.J. (daily meditation guide); Ceremonies of the Modern Roman Rite by Peter J. Elliot; The Sacraments and Their Celebration by Fr. Nicholas Halligan, O.P.; The Catholic Encyclopedic Dictionary of Biblical Terms; A Summary of Catholic History by Fr. Newman Eberhardt, C.M. (2-volume survey of world church history); Introduction to Spirituality and Church of God by Louis Bouyer; Writings of Early Church Fathers (single volume collection); The Lives of the Saints for Every Day of the Year (3-volumes); and hundreds of encyclicals (1853-present) and other modern Church pronouncements. While the obvious appeal is to Catholic homeschoolers, it is also a valuable tool for Protestants seeking broader coverage of church history or knowledge about Catholic doctrine. The CD-ROM will run on Windows or Macintosh systems.
