Positive Action for Christ is best known for their great Bible study courses, but In Their Sandals is a gem of a book that launches from Bible study into composition. It might be used as an adjunct to Bible studies. But it really provides serious, structured work in developing composition skills, so it might be better suited to that as its primary purpose. The price is unbeatable; the student book in inexpensive and the teacher manual is a free download!

Creative writing assignments are based on detailed study of biblical stories. For example, the first lesson is to write an “Accident Report of a Hog Farmer” based on Mark 5: 1-20 while another lesson, “The Story of an Innkeeper and His Wife” is based on Luke 2: 1-20.

There are seven lessons in the book, with each lesson split into activities and assignments for five days. I expect that in most situations the teacher/parent would work through the first lesson with students helping them understand the methodology. Once students have experienced a lesson, they might well work independently at least three of the five days. Some discussion is required--for instruction, in response to the stories students write, and for the biblical application questions. Because of this, a group class is a better setting for the lessons although it is still useful with a single student. However, if you do this in a group, use discretion regarding the personal sharing for the biblical application questions since they challenge students on a personal level with questions such as, “In Genesis 6:5, God saw the continual wickedness in men’s thoughts. What does God think of your thought life?” (p. 55) and “Would you rather serve or be served? Do you concentrate on your own needs before the needs of others? Define selfishness” (p. 79).

Lessons assume that students have a grasp of basic principles, so the goal is to help them develop skills in descriptive writing, character development, structure (such as writing interesting openings), word choice, and other such elements.

Some helpful details and background information are provided for some of the biblical passages. While this enhances understanding of Scripture, it also makes it easier for students to “put themselves” into the story and write in a more interesting fashion.
