Rules of the Game

Educators Publishing Service

This is a series of three, softbound workbooks that teach grammar by the inductive method. That means that rather than telling students a “rule” and following it with exercises, students are led to discover a general principle or definition for themselves. In actuality, the amount of discovery is quite minimal, but it still is a more interesting way to introduce grammar concepts. Once the concept has been presented, students practice with a variety of exercises.

Like Easy Grammar, this is a more concise means of learning grammar, and it can be used with children of widely varying ages—from about fifth grade through high school. Book 1 covers nouns, pronouns, subjects, verbs, capitalization, punctuation, sentences, contractions, possessives, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, interjections, conjunctions, compounds, and subject/verb agreement. Book 2 briefly reviews the above, then continues with direct and indirect objects, linking verbs, predicate nouns and adjectives, appositives, objects of prepositions, prepositional phrases, and punctuation. Book 3 works on dependent clauses, complex and compound-complex sentences, and verbals, while also supplying comprehensive application exercises for all previously learned grammatical elements.

These inexpensive books are not reproducible so purchase one for each student. Answer keys are available at minimal cost.
