Wisdom Words

Alpha Omega/The Weaver

The Weaver has produced one large book in a three-ring binder that covers language (language, composition, and handwriting but not phonics/reading or spelling) for grades K through 6. This is a teacher’s manual with a few reproducible worksheets for specific assignments (not busywork).

The introductory section outlines the overall approach, then the “Directives” section is color coded by grade level, listing specific topics to be learned with brief information for each. Activity approaches to learning are incorporated, using cards on heavy paper that are provided with the book. Both oral and written language are emphasized.

For composition, reproducible worksheets with instructions are provided that help both parent and child learn skills for constructing paragraphs and longer essays. Writing takes place every day in one form or another. Younger children are encouraged to use drawing and verbal expression until they are developmentally ready for writing. Creative writing ideas are included throughout the book to help students practice concepts that have been taught.

Grammar is introduced at young levels then concentrated upon in later grades. Diagramming is included only at sixth grade level as a reinforcement of basic grammar and sentence construction.

This book eliminates much of the repetition present in most language textbooks. Creative teaching suggestions for each topic provide activity, practice, and reinforcement. A “Forms” section is reproducible, but the “Manipulatives” printed on heavy paper are not. This program must be taught one-on-one and requires some preparation time. Only one volume is needed for all of your children in the elementary grades..
