Exploring American History

This fifth grade American History text takes a scattershot approach through short biographies of key figures such as Leif Ericson, Sir Walter Raleigh, Benjamin Franklin, Abraham Lincoln, Eli Whitney, Theodore Roosevelt, and Douglas MacArthur. Even though selective, the biographies paint a fair outline of U.S. history up to the 1990s. The last few chapters are written more broadly, encompassing both the key people and some major events, along with a strong Christian message about the future of our country.

Comprehension questions follow each chapter. An optional test booklet and companion answer key for both the test booklet and textbook questions are available. (Note that questions are recall type rather than essay or discussion, so the key might be especially useful.) The book itself is in a 6" by 9" format; the print is fairly large, and there are black-and-white illustrations. Reading level is about fifth grade, although interest level will range from about fourth through eighth grade levels.
