History Stories for Children [third grade]by Dr. John W. Wayland, Revised and edited by Michael J. McHughChristian Liberty PressThe sixty-four short stories in this book help bring history to life, although the book is intended to serve as a reader. Children should be able to read the stories independently by about third or fourth grade level. With only a few exceptions, stories are from American history rather than world history with a few Bible stories mixed in. Many stories have been adapted to tie in with holidays and anniversaries such as “Saint Valentine,” “Easter Lilies,” and “Hatchets and Cherries.” Because the stories are quite short, this book will not serve as a foundation for study, but it will make an excellent supplement to history studies for most elementary grades. A “Note to the Teacher” follows most stories with brief background information and/or teaching suggestions. Large page and print size make this book very easy to read.
