World History (BJUP)
Suggested for tenth grade, World History covers the entire scope of world history from Christian (strongly Protestant) and patriotic perspectives. It cautions against placing faith in governmental solutions. It includes politics, economics, geography, the arts, and science, dealing with more abstract facets of history rather than primarily upon wars and conquests as we generally see in younger level history books. Even so, the general organization, as we find in just about every textbook, follows history through a succession of wars and conquests. This latest edition covers up through the the Gulf War and the War on Terror.
The 2007 edition is published in two volumes of about 500 pages each. Volumes both include about 100 or more pages of student activity pages. These were formerly published in separate books. I really like the convenience of having these pages bound with the pertinent text material. (Separate Student Activities books are available if you should need one for an additional student.)
Illustrations in the books are a mixture of full-color and black-and-white, although many more full-color illustrations and graphics have been added to this edition that were not in the earlier editions. Added to this edition are "section quizzes" throughout the chapter rather than having all questions at the end of each chapter. At the end of each chapter are vocabulary terms, map activities, factual recall questions, and thought-provoking questions. I particularly like the last group of questions since they relate biblical principles to history and raise worldview issues. For example, one question states: "Arius taught that Christ did not always exist but that He was created by God the Father." It then asks, "How does John 1:1-4 show this teaching to be false?"
The teacher's edition (also in two volumes) has student pages without color, but with teaching notes and answers. It includes teacher material for the student activity pages. I strongly recommend that you purchase both student and teacher editions. A set of tests and companion Tests Answer Key are also available. All four items (student books, teacher's editions, tests, key) are included in the homeschool kit.
The most significant changes in this new edition are much improved formatting and appearance as well as updating and expansion in the last few chapters and a rewritten first chapter.
