Mathematical Reasoning through Verbal Analysis, Book 1 or Book 2The Critical Thinking Co.Book 1 is targeted for students in grades 2-4 and Book 2 for grades 4-8. However, both books can be used by older and younger students since they are not age-graded. (Students working below grade level would probably do better in Critical Thinking Co.’s Cranium Crackers series.) The verbal analysis, an essential aspect of the books, occurs through discussion, so it is essential that the parent/teacher plan time to interact with students for these lessons. A group class would be even better. Lessons are mentally challenging, combining visual/spatial skills, logic, math, and verbal skills. An underlying goal is preparation for the thinking skills necessary for abstract high school-level math There are six categories of lessons in each book: number and numeration, geometry, operations, measurement, relations, and tables and graphs. Although actual mathematical knowledge reflects what is typically taught in grades 2-4 and 4-8 respectively, the lessons are challenging and best address the needs of average to above average students. Both the reproducible student workbook and the teacher’s manual are necessary. The teacher’s manual is essential for the discussions as well as for an answer key.
