Hearts and Handsby Darrel A. TrulsonChristian Liberty PressSubtitled “Beginning Drill in Letters, Phonics and Numbers,” this worktext is similar in concept to those from A Beka (especially ABC-123). Number and letter recognition and writing are taught along with letter sounds. Teaching instructions are in the introduction and on each page as needed. No teacher’s manual is needed. The lack of a teacher’s manual and CLP’s already low prices make this an inexpensive choice. The 150-page book is printed in two colors (black and red), with large type and clear, line-drawn illustrations. Children will be able to do many activities without parental help but will require assistance on some. This is a practical resource for use before a phonics program that assumes children already recognize letters and individual sounds. Note: CLP lists this book under “arithmetic” on their website since it also teaches number recognition.
