Modern Curriculum Press's Plaid Phonics series has been around for a long time and continues in popularity because it offers easy-to-use phonics reinforcement practice that works alongside many forms of instruction. (It is also possible to use it as your primary phonics teaching tool if you use the teacher's resource guide ($52.50 each list price), but that approach is rarely used by homeschoolers.)

Levels K, A, B, and C are appropriate for approximately grades levels K through 3. The latest editions of these workbooks, now printed in full color, include work on reading comprehension and composition that received minimal attention in earlier editions. While levels K-B focus heavily upon phonics, level C branches out more into other topics such as prefixes, suffixees, syllables, synonyms, homonyms, and dictionary skills.

You are not likely to need the teacher's resource guide as an answer key since answers are fairly easy for most parents to figure out.

Levels D, E, and F are also now available, but they focus on word study, thinking, comprehension, and composition skills rather than phonics.
