Lab Science: The How, Why, What, Who, ‘n’ Where Bookwritten and compiled by Barb Edtl SheltonHomeschool Seminars & PublicationsThis unusual book concentrates on one of the most challenging tasks of home schooling for high school. In her friendly, no-pressure style, Shelton combines tips from science experts with practical experience and recommendations of a number of homeschoolers to broaden both your options and your confidence for tackling lab science. She presents a variety of approaches, explaining that there is no one “right way” to do it. She answers the question, “Why do lab science even if you don’t have to?” Lots of ideas and samples, some frameworks and course outlines give you some solid “what to do’s.” Excerpts from works by Mary Schofield (The High School Handbook), Kathleen Julicher (Castle Heights Press), Diana McAlister (Homeschooling the High Schooler), Ted Wade (The Home School Manual), and others provide a variety of specialized commentary. In one section, Shelton includes reproducible sheets for teacher and student such as Class Content Plan/Framework, Lab Science Check-Off Sheet, Grading Criteria and Course Assessment, Lab Experiment Record, Microscope Sketch, collection record pages, Scientist Interview, and God’s View of Science Word Study. At the end of the book is a “where to find it” resource address section. Even if you choose to use a fairly standard course based on a text or program, Shelton’s book will help you organize and manage the lab end of it. If you choose to create your own courses, it should be even more useful.
