HOMESCHOOL REVIEWS |
Beginnings K/5Bob Jones University PressBJUP has put together a foundational kindergarten program that covers phonics, language arts (handwriting, comprehension, composition), science, social studies, music, motor development, and art. All we need to add for a complete program are Bible and math. Lessons are correlated and follow unit-study themes as do KONOS, Weaver, and other thematic studies. Home-School Teacher’s Manuals make the program much more practical for homeschoolers than did the previous classroom-designed manuals, although the program is still a formal academic approach to education. Teacher’s Manuals come in three volumes. Other components are three student worktexts, 13 slim readers, phonics response cards, phonics songs CD, phonics charts, teaching visuals, and flip charts. Components can be purchased separately, but the kit price is less than the cost of individual components. The Teacher’s Manuals are the heart of the program, and it is most practical to use the entire program as laid out within those volumes. See the review of Beginnings under “Phonics Programs” for more information about teaching methodology.
